NDS maintains a small but growing network of collaborators, supporters, and friends in and off Staten Island. The Orientation toward collaboration has been part of our culture since our first collaboration, way back in 1996 , with the food pantry program created to help seniors with groceries every month. The Cultural Awareness Conference held in 2002 brought more than 185 people together at Wagner College to share in the cultural richness of Staten Island and to learn more way of living together in harmony. Our reading and literacy program brings a strong network of people together to support children's curiosity for reading. In 2001 , the New York City Police Department helped us in the distribution of books and snacks to children at our first back to school reading event. In 2002 , we worked with the City Harvest organization to provide a fun, educational event for children on Childhood Hunger Day. Since 2004 , we have worked with Time Warner Cable and Playhouse Disney to bring children and parents together in a reading event.
